The IB learner profile

Ten attributes we teach for.

The IB learner profile describes ten attributes the International Baccalaureate expects of every learner - and that we plan for, name in lessons, and report on alongside academic progress.

Watch: two minutes on the whole profile

What does it mean to be an IB learner?

This short film from the International Baccalaureate explains the learner profile in the IB's own words - the same ten attributes we build every Bloom lesson around.

Background

What is the IB learner profile?

The learner profile is the IB's description of what an educated young person looks like: ten attributes that cover intellectual, personal, emotional and social growth. It is not a subject and it is not a test - it is a set of dispositions every IB programme, from the Primary Years Programme upwards, is designed to develop.

At Bloom International School, an IB PYP Candidate School, the learner profile sits behind our inquiry-based approach: teachers plan for it, name it in lessons, and report on it alongside academic progress.

The ten attributes

What each attribute looks like at Bloom

01

Inquirers

We nurture our curiosity, developing skills for inquiry and research. Children learn by exploring, discovering, and making real-life connections. At Bloom, lessons begin with wonder and a real question - curiosity is where learning starts.

02

Knowledgeable

We develop and use conceptual understanding, exploring knowledge across a range of disciplines — from the natural sciences to the arts. At Bloom, learning connects disciplines instead of isolating them, so knowledge builds across subjects.

03

Thinkers

We use critical and creative thinking skills to analyse and take responsible action on complex problems, in the classroom and in the real world. At Bloom, students weigh evidence, test ideas and take responsible action on problems that matter to them.

04

Communicators

We express ourselves confidently in more than one language — English alongside Khmer, Spanish, French and Mandarin Chinese. At Bloom, this is daily life: five languages in the timetable and classmates from many countries.

05

Principled

We act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness and justice, and take responsibility for our actions and their consequences. At Bloom, fairness and honesty are named, modelled and reported on alongside academic progress.

06

Open-minded

We critically appreciate our own cultures and personal histories, as well as the values and traditions of others — essential in a school of many nationalities. At Bloom, different nationalities, cultures and perspectives share one campus - this is practised every day.

07

Caring

We show empathy, compassion and respect, and commit to service — making a positive difference in the lives of others and in the world around us. At Bloom, students look for real ways to help - on campus, at home and in the community.

08

Risk-takers

We approach uncertainty with forethought and determination, working independently and cooperatively to explore new ideas and strategies. At Bloom, students are encouraged to try, fail safely and try again - independently and together.

09

Balanced

We understand the importance of balancing the intellectual, physical and emotional parts of our lives — supported by sport, the arts and wellbeing programs. At Bloom, movement, creativity and rest have their own space in the week, not just the leftover minutes.

10

Reflective

We thoughtfully consider the world and our own ideas and experience, working to understand our strengths and weaknesses as learners. At Bloom, students look back on their own learning regularly and set their next goal themselves.

Attribute descriptions follow the official IB learner profile wording, followed by how the attribute comes to life at Bloom International School.

From profile to practice

How we bring the profile to life

In lessons

Named and practised

Inquiry-based units begin with wonder and a real question. Teachers name the attribute a lesson is developing, so students recognise the habit they are building - not just the content they are covering.

Across subjects

Connected, not isolated

Concepts are taught through an integration of languages, math, science, the arts and physical education - so one piece of learning shows up as knowledge, communication and reflection at once.

In school life

Beyond the timetable

Sport, the arts, wellbeing programs and service give the attributes somewhere to live outside the classroom: leading a team, performing on stage, helping the community.
